What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning and Exam
When patients fail to establish a schedule of routine dental checkups, it dramatically increases their risk of developing oral health complications, which may require complex and costly treatment in the future. These complications can be avoided with regular dental cleaning and examinations at Dr. Brandon Huang's Manhattan, NY, office. In addition to professional teeth cleaning, Dr. Huang performs dental examinations to check for early signs of serious diseases, including oral cancer. If diagnosed early, oral cancer is generally highly treatable.
UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF CHECKUPS
By combining regular dental cleanings and examinations with daily brushing and flossing, you can dramatically reduce the possibility of developing gum disease, cavities, and several other oral health issues. These preventative measures preserve and promote oral health, and also can save you time and money by avoiding costly corrective procedures.
Plaque can build up on your teeth despite good at-home care, which can harden into tartar over time. When you undergo a dental cleaning at our office, we will use special dental tools to gently clean your teeth, including a pick to remove surface plaque and tartar. Once your teeth have been cleaned, we will use dental floss to remove any remaining debris. Lastly, a special polishing paste is used to make your teeth shine. You may follow your dental cleaning appointment with cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening to achieve a vibrant, bright smile.
Decay, tartar buildup, gum recession, and periodontal disease can all be diagnosed and treated during a dental examination. Dr. Huang will take x-rays to further examine the health of your teeth and jaw. If needed, we can use these images to review any concerns with you.
An oral cancer screening is included in every dental exam Dr. Huang performs. As oral cancer is often asymptomatic in its early stages, your dentist can be the first line of defense in combating this serious disease. Oral cancer is typically highly treatable if detected early. During your screening, Dr. Huang will look for red or white patches, ulcers, lumps, areas of tenderness, or any other abnormalities in your mouth.

Your examination will conclude with a discussion of any existing conditions, treatment recommendations, and instructions for at-home care. For example, if we find areas that require a restorative treatment, we can discuss the risks and benefits of different dental materials. Additionally, if you tend to miss certain areas during flossing, we can bring these to your attention. You will be also be provided with a complimentary toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss when your examination ends.
