Dental Implants: The Gold Standard in Restorative Care
If you have experienced tooth loss, it is vital to seek restorative care in order to safeguard the health of your jawbone and remaining teeth. In the past, treatment options were limited to traditional crowns, bridges, or dentures. With the advancement of dental technology, dentists can now offer implant-supported restorations, which replace missing teeth from root to crown and provide unparalleled support. Dr. Brandon Huang is an expert in placing and restoring dental implants at his Manhattan, NY, office.
WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
When you lose a tooth, it often leads to jawbone atrophy, as the tooth roots that usually stimulate the surrounding tissue are missing. This can weaken the jaw and lead to further tooth loss.
Dental implants are small titanium posts surgically inserted into the jawbone to function as tooth roots. Implants are an all-encompassing restorative solution that provides a secure foundation for dental crowns, bridges, and dentures.
CANDIDATES FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS
During your initial consultation, Dr. Huang will assess your candidacy before recommending implants. This process may reveal the need for any preparatory surgeries such as a bone graft, which enables patients with insufficient jawbone density to become eligible for implants. In general, dental implant candidates:
- Have good general, oral, and periodontal health
- Are missing one or more teeth, or need their damaged teeth to be extracted
- Do not smoke, or are willing to not smoke during the healing process
- Have enough bone density to secure the implant in the jaw, or are healthy enough to undergo bone grafting to strengthen the jaw
- Are committed to consistent oral hygiene and professional checkups
If you undergo bone grafting to augment your jawbone, it significantly increases your total treatment time. Your jaw will need four to six months to heal before you can receive implants.
After your initial examination to determine your candidacy, Dr. Huang will create scans of your jaw and take impressions of your teeth. This allows the doctor to precisely plan your procedure and have your temporary restoration ready the day of your surgery.
"Dr. Huang places and restores implants, providing comprehensive and streamlined care all in one location."
Dr. Huang will begin the procedure by administering anesthesia to numb the surgical area. If you choose, the doctor can also provide sedation to ensure your comfort. Dr. Huang may perform any necessary tooth extractions prior to implant placement. He then will make incisions in your gums, create small holes in the jaw, and place your implants. After the implants have been placed, the incisions are cleaned and sutured closed. Depending on your needs, the doctor may place a temporary restoration while you heal. You may feel groggy when the surgery is complete, and you should arrange for a ride home.
As you heal, the implant will fuse with your jawbone through a process known as osseointegration. This allows dental implants to mimic natural tooth roots and helps prevent further jawbone degeneration. It is a crucial step of your dental implant treatment and will require four to six months to complete.
Once you have healed, Dr. Huang can attach abutments, if necessary, and secure a crown, bridge, or denture to your implants.
WHY CHOOSE IMPLANTS?
Dental implants are considered the gold standard in restorative dentistry. They are the only restorative option that protects the health of your jaw. As implants replace your dental roots, the titanium posts stimulate new bone growth, preventing bone atrophy and further tooth loss. Dental implants provide the most stable foundation for natural-looking prostheses, and unlike removable restorations, your implant-supported prosthetic will not slip or affect your ability to eat your favorite foods.
